Abatement Application

An abatement form is used if you do not feel your property is properly assessed.

This can be for three reasons:

1: If there are data errors on your assessment record; ie: incorrect description or measurement of property

2: If you do not feel it is at market value. If you do not feel you could have sold your property for the assessment amount at the time of assessment;currently that date is April 1st. This needs to be supported by comparable sales or a professional opinion of value.

3: If you do not feel your assessment is proportionate to other properties similar to yours in town.

An abatement form can also be used if claiming poverty or inability to pay, state in detail why abatement of taxes is appropriate as opposed to some other relief such as relocating, refinancing or obtaining some alternative public assistance.

The abatement form must be completed after you receive your final (November) tax bill for the year and before March 1st. Example if you are contesting your assessment for 2023, the form can not be filed until you receive the November 2023 tax bill and must be filed by March 1st of 2024. An abatement form can not be filed for previous years' assessments.
