Supplies for Drawing Classes

Please bring these supplies to class. Supplies are the same for beginner and intermediate classes.

Supplies are simple and relatively inexpensive. Estimated total price is under $50.

  • A DRAWING PAD AT LEAST 9”X12”. (Larger is fine.) High-end drawing paper is not necessary. We’ll be doing lots of sketching and quick practice drawings so a student-quality drawing pad will do fine to begin.
  • DRAWING BOARD. This is the support for your paper. A masonite drawing board is ideal and highly recommended. A 15” x 16” sketch board from dickblick.com costs about $10.
  • GRAPHITE DRAWING PENCILS. At least a couple of Prismacolor Ebony Graphite soft lead pencil are strongly recommended. A dozen at Amazon cost about $8.      It is NOT necessary to purchase a pencil kit of varied hardness or charcoal. If not Prismacolor Ebony pencils, other brands of soft lead pencils are OK.
  • PENCIL SHARPENER. A simple grade-school type personal sharpener is fine. Desktop batter operated sharpeners are a nice convenience although not necessary. The Staedtler 2-Hole Oblong Pencil Sharpener manual model is one good choice.
  • A “PLASTIC” ERASER is also highly recommended. Staedtler Mars Plastic Erasers (or their equivalent) are ideal. Plastic erasers don’t shed “crumbs” and are less abrasive than other typical erasers. (Or, the classic pink rubber slab eraser is acceptable too.)
  • ARTIST DRAFTING TAPE to hold your sheets in place on the drawing board. Low-tack painter’s tape is acceptable and is likely cheaper if purchased at a discount house like Job Lots. Half-inch width minimum.
