School Administrative Unit 16

Lincoln Street School

The Town of Exeter is one of the six towns that make up SAU 16. The other Towns in the SAU are Brentwood, East Kingston, Exeter, Kensington, Newfields, and Stratham.   Each Town elects a local school board to oversee that town’s public education up through grade 5.

The Exeter Region Cooperative School Board is responsible for the oversight of grades 6-12 and adult education in all six towns, and is elected by the combined voters of all six communities. The Exeter Region Cooperative School District is a legal entity, responsible for education in grades 6-12 as well as adult education, in the same manner that each town school district is responsible for education up through grade 5 in that town.

SAU 16's mission is to help students gain knowledge and skills that build intellect, character, and a lifelong thirst for learning. To facilitate this mission multiple schools are in place for Exeter residents.

Phillips Exeter Academy is a private, co-educational residential school serving 1000 students in grades 9 through 12, and post-graduate level. Exeter, founded in 1781 by John Phillips, has a tradition of academic excellence, a distinguished faculty, and a long history of educating young people to find their place in the world.

Phillips Exeter Academy's mission has been articulated as "Above all it is expected that the attention of instructors to the disposition of the minds and morals of the youth under their charge will exceed every other care; well considering that though goodness without knowledge is weak and feeble, yet knowledge without goodness is dangerous, and that both united form the noblest character, and lay the surest foundation of usefulness to mankind."
