River Herring Arrive in Exeter

Exeter, NH - May 13th, 2022: The annual river herring run is underway in downtown Exeter. Every year, Alewife and Blueback herring swim in from the Gulf of Maine to spawn in the freshwater rivers of New England. The herring that swim up the Squamscott to jump the falls downtown into the Exeter River were born here three to four years ago. A chemical imprint makes sure that they return to the river of their origin to spawn the next generation. Residents and visitors can watch the herrings run from String Bridge and Founder's Park where the herring gather in small pools to rest before continuing up over the rushing water of the falls. Be sure to follow Exeter TV on YouTube and Facebook for more River Herring updates.
