Paving

Town of Exeter New Hampshire Official Website

Paving is the largest capital investment made by the Highway Department. The reconstruction and repaving of Exeter's roads is a vital task that is complicated by a multitude of variables. Similar to any outdoor activity in New Hampshire - paving is seasonal, but rain and other atmospheric changes cause the asphalt to expand and contract with temperature changes.

The cost to simply rebuild and pave the oldest roads would be too costly for the Town. To reduce cost these projects blend old road rebuilds with maintenance to newer roads. Preemptive maintenance to newer roads reduces their overall lifetime cost. This helps create a road network with lower maintenance costs and a high average quality.

The system is also being used to help eliminate the current backlog of paving projects. As of 2010, there were near $7 million dollars of backlog paving throughout Exeter. By using the PAVER Pavement Management system, the Public Works Department reduces this backlog in a manner that is both quick and cost-effective.
